Two questions about a 18th century spoon from Danzig

Postby R ingo » Mon Nov 09, 2009 6:20 am

Hello,

I have two questions about a spoon from Danzig. Neither the makers mark nor the mark of the "Beschaumeister" are in Rosenberg. Can someone help me with this marks? The IH mark is probably Jakob Haase (Hase), but I am not sure.
The second question is about the two cut-marks or grooves on the stem.
What is the meaning of these decoration? Is it a typological rudiment?

Kind regards,
Ringo

thank You theoderich, I also think, that the spoon is from the midddle of the 18th century.

I would be glad, if someone knows someting about the ornament on the stem/ handle. It is not singular. I have already seen it on other spoons from this time.
Is it to interpret in connection to the ornament on the bowl? Or is it a typological rudiment? That is a feature that once had a proper function, but through time has developed into a mere ornament.
Kind regards,
Ringo

The “S” is the mark of assayer Michael Schleich (Master 1743, died 1775), who served as guild master in 1757, 1765 & 1769, so your spoon was made in one of those years.

“IH” is the maker’s mark of Jakob Haase II (1702-1762; Master 1730). His workshop was continued by his widow until 1774, so the 1765 and 1769 dates are still possible.

Hope this helps!
