Help needed to identify silver marks on napkin rings

Postby davidtheeighth » Wed Sep 30, 2009 10:09 am

Hi
I have two what I think are napkin rings (size = 5.5cm diam and 33cm high). They are both beautifully engraved all around (see photo). But they have the smallest silver marks I have come across. You can see these in the photo. I have managed to photo and enlarge the 3 marks but it doesn't help me. The '13' mark might indicate it's a german item. Can anyone throw some light on this? Many thanks
David

Hi and welcome to the forum,

My guess is that your napkin rings are German and from Schwäbisch Gmünd. The town mark looks like the head of a unicorn and they are in my opinion from the mid 19th century.

I am not able to decipher the left mark, which perhaps is the maker's.

Hope this helps!

Best regards/JAKJO

Dear JAKJO
Many thanks for the info. I'm amazed that you were able to identify the marks so quickly.
Kindest regards

What is the small mark on Your napkin ring?
It looks like a french import-mark. Have You a better image?

I have never seen a Item with the Schwäbisch Gmünd Hallmark with a makers mark.

Dear Theoderich
Apologies for the late reply to your post. I've been away.
I have looked at the French marks you sent me and I can't say I was able to match any with the one on my napkin ring. But then I'm no expert in these things.
Regards
David
