unknown Berlin makers mark probably late 18 century

Postby R ingo » Sun Sep 13, 2009 12:02 pm

Hello,
can someone help me with the identification of the maker of these berlin spoons? The year-letter is a "F" (late 18 century). The makers name or mark is probably DUM? or DUK?. It is quite worn out.

Kind regards,
Ringo

Scheffler's Berliner Goldschmiede doesn't show this maker's mark. However, as the assayer's letter "F" is known to date ca. 1779-1785, there is only one maker in Scheffler beginning with "Dum" and working in the proper time frame: Friedrich Dumcke (Scheffler maker #1246a). The only information Scheffler gives on him is that he & his wife had a daughter born 1782. Still, he looks like the only conceivable possibility.

Hope this helps!

Further checking leads me to believe that Dumcke #1246a is the same as Scheffler #1212: Johann Carl Friedrich Wilhelm Domcke (1760-1785), apprenticed 1775-1777 to Isac Ravel and J. Humbert. He died young as a “Goldschmiedsgesell” - which I think translates as “journeyman goldsmith” — which is how “Friedrich Dumcke” is also described. As such, however, he probably wouldn’t have been entitled to use his own mark — but still he remains the only likely candidate.

Curiouser & curiouser, as Alice said.
