German Silver plate identification help needed

Postby student » Wed Apr 22, 2009 4:20 pm

This little tray was purchased with a set of Sterling baby cups, if that is any help, one smaller than the other. I think it to be plate, because of the 830 and wondered what year it is and where it was made. From my small amount of research, I think it to be German. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hello and welcome.

Your piece is not silverplated.
The 830 refers to the fineness of the silver.

student wrote " I think it to be plate ...." It is plate (830/1000)! In England I was told, that the word comes from the Spanish plata and doesn't mean plated but solid silver. It is often used in the wrong way.

Hi Silverfan,

You are quite correct, however the term has now become outdated, and is little used now, for fear of confusion.

I mentioned the piece was not silverplated because student originally posted this thread in the silverplate section.
I moved it here to German silver.
