French 18th century salt or pseudo??

Postby ktiggeloven » Fri Mar 27, 2009 7:36 pm

I have recently acquired a salt in my collection which was sold to me as being 18th century French. I am however not quite certain if the marks are French marks, or whether they are pseudo marks. Could someone enlighten me? Thanks in advance,
Kasper

Maybe »Hanau« Pseudomarks? Or Amsterdam’se?

Hello Kasper

It seems to be that the salt could be more be made in XX century, then French second half XVIII century.

Please look here - »Unattributed Pseudo-Marks on Hanau Style Silver« (lower third of the “page", right side column):

http://www.925-1000.com/Fgerman_hanau_marks_01.html

In K.A. Citroen book »Valse Zilvermerken in Nederland« (edition 1977, p. 39, numb. 275) is also shown a nearly similar »R« crowned; but the cartouche is slightly different too. The explanation there fore is: »275 nabootsing van een [French] jaarletter [it was observed by K.A. Citroen on] kannen, speelgoed (A)« [A = on articles from Amsterdam]. (Translation: »[number] 275 is a Pseudo French year letter; it was found on jugs and toys.)

The flask like »bottle« isn’t mentioned — not in »925-1000«, but also not in Citroen.

Kind regards silverport
