Purse Frame ID Hallmark, Origin, Age

Postby BobbieK » Thu Jan 29, 2009 5:02 pm

I have a silver purse frame, unusual in that it has a divider compartment, and a latch. I don't know if it's silverplate or sterling, there is no other marks or numbers but these. Thanks much for any info. The middle mark is the letter A with a sprig behind it and a crown over it. Are these "fantasy" marks. Could this be sterling?

Hello, this cries Hanau. Thiele documents the crowned R as being used by Georg Roth of Hanau. Best wishes, Bahner

Hi,

Welcome to the Forum.

It is silver, but as to the standard, I believe the Hanau makers varied depending as to which country they were exporting to, so it may not be sterling.

Bahner- I believe Georg Roth started production in 1891 and I've seen references that show him still working in the mid 1920's, but have any idea when he finially stopped production?

Regards Trev.

Hello, according to Scheffler Roth was founded in 1891. He is listed in the directories until ca. 1919. Later there is a Roth & Neebe in Hanau, possibly a successor, listed until the 1930ies (possibly later ?). Roth and/or Roth & Neebe are no longer listed in the directories of the early 1940ies. Best wishes, Bahner
