Unknown mark-830 Silver reticulated Fish Snuff-Help please!

Postby BiggerDiamondsPlease » Sat Nov 29, 2008 10:32 pm

Hello and thank you for your interest in helping to identify the unidentified mark on this lovely reticulated fish snuff box. There are two marks, one of which is 830 for the silver standard, the other....? In identifying the hallmark, I am also hoping to guesstimate the age of this fish. Both marks are located on the lip of the inside rim where the head and the body meet when closed. Fish is about 3 1/4 long. Does anyone know where this mark is from? Thank you so much for sharing your expertise!

This is the "830" mark.

Could the mysterious mark in question possibly be the upper half of the Hamburg Mark?

Also, does anyone recognize the shape of the 830 Silver Mark that can link it to any one country of origin? That mark seems distinct enough in the shape of the numbers, and I know it also makes a huge difference whether or not the mark included a round. oval, or square cartouche - or none at all as is the case here. Surely someone must have some little inkling about the marks on this fish. Nevertheless, please tell me if this lovely piece belonged to you, where would you focus your hunt? Who would you consult? Which countries stamped 830 like shown on this fish, I may have missed something?

Would this indeed be a "snuff box" or perhaps a "spice box"?

I know there are a lot of highly knowledgeable people on this board. Somebody must know something, anything. Thank you in advance for any help you can lend me.
