Mark on German Thimble

Postby carling » Thu Oct 20, 2005 7:22 am

Can anyone identify the mark just above the rim on this German 800 silver thimble?

pic

The thimble was most probably made by Gebrüder Gabler of Schorndorf evidenced by the characteristic star pattern mark on the crown though other makers eg Soergel & Stollmeyer (Schwäbisch Gmünd), Lotthammer and Wengert (both of Pforzheim) also used a variation of this star pattern making it quite difficult to identify the maker.

I've not seen the other mark before. Possibly an import mark?

»V« in script = Dutch Import mark »Voor vreemde werken«.

Hello »carling«

Maybe yours question you has already forgotten, or it's already solved by collector's experience?

The tiny mark, it's impossible to "see" details, I suppose, is the Dutch »V« in script import mark; described as import mark »Voor vreemde werken«. The letter »V« is the first letter of the word »vreemd« = foreign.

This mark was a successor mark on other, in their design different, Dutch »V« marks with similar signification.

These marks were struck then after, when the tax was paid. They are only an indication there fore, that the item which bear this mark, is imported legally, and that he is of minimum fineness of 800-1,000. That mark isn't any indication of items origin.

Only an approximate date is given; because this specific mark was in use from 1 January 1906 on, until 31 August 1953.

Kind regards silverport
