Halbmond and the 750 standard?

Postby MLF » Wed Sep 17, 2008 4:54 pm

Hello forum,

I have these dinner forks made by Wilkens in the 19th Century. They pussle me by being marked with the 750 silver standard and the crescent moon. Granted, there is no crown, so it's probably not a sensational case of the 750 standard being used after 1884 - but why would the Halbmond be used?

Best wishes
Mikael

Hello, the halfmoon in this case is the old Wilkens mark, used ca. 1860ies to late 1880ies. Best wishes, Bahner

Ah, the explanation is rather mundane then! Thanks Bahner - your knowledge of German silver is second to none.

Best wishes
Mikael
