Hi-

I have just acquired the most incredible box. I am looking for a maker and when this piece may have been made. Is this a marriage of sorts. The top is jade and the bottom is silver. The design in the jade is reproduced in the silver.

Maybe the jade piece is much older. Marked 800 crescent and moon H. Schaper . Think this is maybe a store in Germany. The other maker looks like a G over P.

If anyone has any info about it I would really appreciate.

Hello, Hugo Schaper (b. 1844, d. 1915) was a Berlin court jeweller. He opened his shop in 1875. Later his son Carl Hugo Sch. took over. The shop existed well into the 1940ies. Possibly Schaper was just the retailer of this piece and "GR" is the (unidentified) real maker. Best wishes, Bahner

I believe the maker's mark is a cojoined 'F&G" for Forster & Graf, founded in Schwabische Gmund in 1884.
In the U.S., the craze for antique jades mounted in silver ran from around 1915 or so, to well into the 1930's. I would imagine a similar time frame applies to Germany.

Scratch that last post, it was no more than wishful thinking on my part (been hoping for a forster & graf mark to be posted here for a couple of years now).
On closer inspection, although similar to the FG mark, it is not. I suggest you clean/polish the mark to give it some sharpness and then post another image.
I suspect it may turn out to be the mark below of Flugge & Co. of Berlin. I do not know if this is the type of ware they manufactured, but it is the best match I could find. The mark was created by manipulating your mark image in a photo program.
