1944. This must have been an un-assayed older piece which was submitted for assay to the LAO, possibly to legitimise its re-sale.

Many thanks Phil
for your reply,I have not seen LOA mark on Hanau pieces before,1944 date a bit unusual ,around war time, strange no import mark.
Regards Guido.

No import mark as it was just an old piece of unassayed silver of (probably) unknown origin.

Hi Phil
Again many thanks for your comments.
Do you agree that it is probably a Hanau made box? it is a cast box not repousse. similar to my Georg Roth box.
I feel it was marked on the base ,small amount still there ,not sure if marks were removed on purpose or natural wear (I feel on purpose,as a lot of fine scratches, not sure the reason)
date 1944 may be a clue. I understand now why no import mark (no marks coming into England)
Not wanting to be know as a German item. Just my theory.
Regards Guido.

Sorry, Guido, I have no idea about the ultimate origin of this box. Maybe someone else would like to comment on the style.
