1940s ring- any help appreciated!

Hi there,
Apologies - I don't have a photo but would be really, really grateful if someone could shed light on this!
It's my grandmother's engagement ring, purchased in 1948. There are no hallmarks at all, but the inside of the ring is stamped 9ct. plat (which of course refers to the shank and the setting respectively) and then a reference number: 16870. Those are the only marks.
Very many thanks for any help!
