Edwrad Durban & Co. at Chester?

Postby geraldine-rose » Thu Feb 21, 2013 9:13 pm

G'day from Downunder
This one is making what's left of my brain hurt!
I have a D&Co. makers mark with Chester shield (I think)
The complete mark is: ]D&Co. Crown 18 Shield B 819
Looks like a 1910 B,
I have a good pic

Appreciate any feedback. Cheers.

Hi geraldine-rose,

Welcome to the Forum.

That is indeed the mark of Edward Henry Durban trading as Edward Durban & Co. of 41, Frederick Street, Birmingham. He registered that mark at the Chester Assay Office on the 13th December 1901.

I make the date letter to be 1902. See: Chester Date Letters

Thank you for the super-quick and generous reply
Is there any way that you know of that I can research this particular piece? Was jewellery made to order then and were records kept? I inherited this ring and have no idea of its provenance - cheers

Then, as today, jewellery was made to order, but also designed, manufactured and supplied, to the wholesale/retail network. Without any provenance, I fear you may struggle with further progress researching this ring, but wish you every luck with your efforts and I would be delighted to be proved wrong.

Keep us posted with your research.

Thank you - there seems to be more information on the net about his cricketing career than his jewellery!
Maybe I'll find some more luck here...
