Many marks on one old gold ring...

Postby nodnodwinkwink » Mon Jan 28, 2013 10:20 am

This old ring has been sitting in a box junk for a long time and I've been trying to find out the meaning of the marks on this ring but I hit a dead end.
Its a pretty ugly old thing, but the cur

Heres a few pics:

Faded marks: http://i.imgur.com/kxdW1nP.jpg
More recent marks: http://i.imgur.com/vpNAfWe.jpg

So, correct me if i'm wrong but i believe AJLd is the makers mark of Adlers London but i'm not too sure on that one.
375 means it is 9ct gold.
The A stamp means it was made in 1975.

I'm curious as to what the good people of 925-1000.com might think the other marks mean.
What has really confused me is that the faded marks seem to have a completely different shape to the other marks.
Can anyone help me out?

Also could anyone tell me where i could find out more about the gem? I've been told its probably a pretty cheap stone and more than likely a man made corundum.
Is there anyway i could verify this?

Thanks for taking a look!

Hi,

Welcome to the Forum.

I believe the worn marks are earlier standard English 9ct marks (upside down in your image):

As to why the ring was later re-assayed, well, what appears in your image to be solder lines may provide the clue, if there has been any addition to the original item, due to perhaps to letting in a piece of gold to either replace damage or just to make it larger in size, then legally it must be assayed again before it is offered for sale.

Trev.
