Hello,

Welcome to the forum.
Be so kind to provide us with a close up of the marks (with the macro function on your camera).
A sharp image of the marks might give some answers.

Regards,

Oel

OEL the markings are zoomed as far as they will go
what we have is a capital CM
and there is a capital G inside what looks like () either side of it

Ok. What I suggest is to have the box tested and to find out its gold standard (fineness).
I prefer an Assay office; the Assay office will after determination of a legal fineness stamp the box accordingly. Only with your permission. If not a good jewelry/gold shop will do.
My personal impression the box is a recent copy or in the manner of but looks to be made out of gold, however as far as I can see the box lacks any valid gold (hall) marks. I assume you know more about the provenance of the box.
I checked the book Jan Divis Gold Stempel aus aller Welt under G. Please check for yourself.

Hi,

Please give all information straight! 18 K is not a hallmark, only an European indication that we could be looking at 18 carat gold. Again I advise to have the box tested to determine gold fineness because the box does not show any official hallmarks. To answer a question about who made it and how old and where from? Hallmarks and date letters are very useful to provide us with the answers. In your case the CM and the capital G could be maker’s/retailer’s marks. Land of origin not clear to me. No More No Less.
