Gold ring Chester hallmark help request

Postby lisieux02 » Sat Mar 26, 2011 11:49 pm

The image below is of a Chester hallmark from what appears to be 1897. The maker's mark appears to have worn and we are having trouble identifying the meaning of the reversed 5 and confirming the date. Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Many thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark,

Welcome to the Forum.

The maker's mark, or what's left of it, would have been the mark on the left of your image. The dateletter is the letter 't', (the reversed '5'), idicating that date of assay of your ring at Chester was 1944, this is confirmed by the additional mark on the far right of your mark image, this mark is known as the 'Utility' mark and information about it can be found at: viewtopic.php?f=36&t=14995.

Regards Trev.

Hi Trev, thank you so much. I didn't expected to get such a quick response.
I'm extremely grateful. We've been scratching our heads for a while and the owner was insistent that the date was late 19th Century but in context 1944 makes complete sense. It seems the owner got two rings mixed up. This one was for a wedding in February 1945.

Many, many thanks,
Mark
