Help with "PH" hallmark on a 14K ring

Postby vtcoins24 » Thu Oct 07, 2010 12:30 pm

Sorry for the small pics. I tried!

Three marks:

1. 585
2. PH
3. Animal?

Any ideas on the maker and country?

Thanks!

I don't have an answer but think that " 585 " may acually be " SBS "

The ring is maybe of Czech or Hungarian origin?

Hello »ptcoins24«

Welcome to the Forum.

The »PH« mark in antic letters, placed in a horizontal oval, which is notched horizontal, is a maker’s mark in the scheme of the Austro-Hungarian Empire Assay Offices. The scheme was introduced in 1867 — the mark of yours ring is scheme »VI-1«.

For Vienna, Austria isn’t mentioned any maker with this mark.

In the Austro-Hungarian Empire where a huge amount of Assay Offices — and only from Vienna Assay Offices exist until yet a reliable guide on registered maker’s marks.

But to could inform you with more details, it’s necessary to have very clear imagesnot these kind of blurry images you’ve presented yet.

Especially it’s necessary to know more as only » Animal? « - please post at least a very clear image of that mark!

If you couldn’t make a much better photo, then please read this: viewtopic.php?f=34&t=19420

»585« is, as you already know, in times of decimal systems the decimal equivalent for from ancient times on usual »14 carat«.

What »AccentDesign« suggest, that is an interpretation as a ‘New-be’; all of us have start like he (or she?) by »trial and error«.

Kind regards silverport

It is definitely a "585". My pictures are crappy!

Thank you for commenting, though.

Thank you for the information.

Unfortunately, the images I posted are the best I can come up with. The animal looks to be four legged with a long body and tail.

So I guess all we can tell is that the ring is 14K gold, Austro-Hungarian and has a maker's mark "PH"?

Thanks for all the help!

Silverport,

Thanks again for the help, but I am unable to sketch the mark or get a better photo.

Take care!

PH is PH Rings, in the UK since 1967. "585" is the compulsory report of gold content required since 1973 in UK and means 58.5% gold, or 14K equivalent. The style appears to be from the early to mid 1980s. You may be able to contact PH to find out more details. Do a web search for them or try this link:
