Help wanted on old Gold Watch

Postby tux » Thu Sep 09, 2010 2:04 pm

I have a very nice and cool watch.
It looks kinda old because its basicaly a small pocketwatch on a bracelet.
I know the Squirrel is the 14k mark from Swiss, right?
And the circle with crown seems to be German?
But whats the B for? Is it a yearsmark or a Makers mark?
All info is very welcome, would like to know at least the approx. age.
Also it looks like the crown is missing on the side? Or could it be a key version?
Backside looks like Emaille or whatever it's called in English :-)
Thanks!

Hi Yux,

Beautiful watch you have.

The Crown for Germany. The National Gold Mark, a crown in a circle, is self-applied by the manufacturer to designate gold items with a minimum of 585 fine. Use 1884 to Date.
Squirrel for Switzerland for gold 583/585 fine, letter or symbol under or perhaps above squirrel to indicate the Assay office. For example the symbol + is for Berne used 1883-1995 and the letter G is for Geneva 1880 to Date.
Most probably the watch has been made in Germany for the Swiss market and the B could by a symbol for the manufacturer.

Hi,

Thanks for your PM

This frame shape of the Squirrel has been used 1880-1934. Looking at your lady wrist watch, which misses its crown, it yells late art nouveau period. Wrist watches became popular after the First World War. I believe your wrist watch has been made between circa 1913-1920. The early pocket watches were key winded, after around 1850-1860 most pocket watches became stem winded, by use of the little crown.

O yes, I would also like to mark the follow:

Normally when you have a watch the 12 is next to the bracelets beginning.
Here the 3 is there... This means that when you are wearing it you don't have to move your hand but just keep it straight to see the time... I thought that was pretty unusual :-)

Hi,

Gouda Assay Office for gold 585 fineness, used 1955 to Date. Weight mark. These marks had a simple coded system to indicate the items weight. By taking the value of the number inside the frame of the mark and multiplying it by 5, one is able to determine the weight of the item in grams (4 x 5 = 20 grams). Date use 1953 to Date. The rectangular mark with + JPC, is a maker’s/importer’s mark for Jansen, Post & Cocx n.v / b.v, location Amsterdam, date 1965 to date. The mark in the chain connection: EdG (underlined with + above the d ) is for the manufacturer: M van Leeuwen (Constantfabrieken b.v), located in Rotterdam , date 1961/1982. Meaning your wrist watch has been provided with a new watchband, made of gold, 585 fineness, and made somewhere between 1965 -1982.

Hi,

Come to think about it your watch is a pendant watch made around the end of the 19th, beginning of the 20th century in Germany and on a later stage converted into a wrist watch. Hence the round and beautiful decorated backside of this watch, which is not very usual for a wrist watch. Normally a wrist watch has a flat backside, a bit more comfortable to wear around your wrist.
