Hello and welcome to the forum.

Switzerland began using decimal number fineness marks on silver in 1934.
I assume this is also true of gold marks.
1840 is likely when the company was founded.

A watch forum probably could help you more.

585 Gold pocket watch case

Postby silverport » Sun May 02, 2010 11:45 am

Hello

In Patrick’s excerpt shown marks, the right one is from 1 January 1888 on the German mark for Gold wares = Circle’s signification is the Sun, an old alchemist symbol for Gold; and the in the Sun included Emperors Crown is the symbol for Germany.

Maybe this watch case was made in Germany (e.g. Pforzheim?), and then after be exported to Switzerland, for to be fit there with a high end quality watch mechanism?

Kind regards silverport

Additional remark on founding date of Mermod Fréres = 1816

Postby silverport » Mon May 03, 2010 6:53 am

Hello

In a guide I've found a Mermod Fréres mark which has a year’s indication of company be founded: 1816.

Mermod Fréres itself informs also, to be founded 1816.

For what in your case 1840 stand for I don't know. Case itself is made after 1 January 1888 ... until xxxx; because German marks are struck by maker's themselves - year indications aren't struck normally.

The drawings of several distinct makers’ mark with year’s indication 1616 are a wrong interpretation of maybe worn marks? http://www.mikrolisk.de/show.php?site=2 ... ucheMarker

Kind regards silverport
