Need help identifying Ladies Pocket Watch please.

Postby Tylerp327 » Wed Mar 03, 2010 6:12 am

Image Image Image

The tiny marks on either side of the oval with 585 in it seem to be the same. Looks like a bushy tailed squirrel or rabbit.
Lower left is a crown inside a circle.
Lower right appears to be a dogface inside a coat-of-arms?
Just out of the picture is the number 17653 in a plain font.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hi,

The 'Squirrel' marks are the official Swiss marks for 14ct gold, the 585 is 585/1000 = 14ct. Suspect the other two marks are the marks of the casemaker, hopefully someone can ID them.

A close inspection of the squirrel mark may reveal a letter behind the ears of the squirrel, this may identify the assay office where your case was marked.

Hello

Pocket watch case is from German origin; maybe made in Pforzheim, Baden.

Left hand mark “Crown in a Circle” is in reality (from 1.1.1888 on) the German Mark for pure Gold, and objects made from Gold alloys.

It’s symbolic is: »Imperial Crown« is signification for Germany; and the circle is the »Sun«, an alchemist and chemist symbol for Gold = both together — as here shown — symbolize in Germany »Gold«.

585 in this oval is signification of fineness = 585 of 1,000 or a little bit more then 14 carat Gold in 24 carat of alloy. The style of ciphers and oval suggest to me that punch was made before World War I.

Dogs head, watching to the left, was part of maker’s mark from Ad. Waldmann, Gold- and Silverware Factory, Pforzheim, Baden. Dogs head was in a lozenge or diamond — maybe for Export to France? Attention! The here shown “shield” could be a market area oriented variation — because dogs head itself is very similar until details. Ad. Waldmann is maybe successor of a former company witch has used before that here shown mark? Documented details here fore I haven’t yet.

Pocket watch case was maybe for reason of completion with a Swiss quality mechanism exported to Switzerland and has got there these squirrel marks?

Kind regards silverport
