Unknown maker Help please...

Postby clown123 » Fri May 08, 2009 6:19 pm

This is an 18K gold pocket watch. Weighs about 12 ounces! Originally sold by JW Benson, 25 Old Bond Street. Not sure about the year or maker.
Any help much appreciated. Thanks!

Hello.

Not 100% sure, but I think your F.T mark was entered by Frederick Trahern on January 28, 1889.
The dot being slightly above the base of the letters is a key to identifying his mark.
Entered this mark again on February 9, 1909.

Not sure about the date letter. We will need some help there.

Hi,

12 Ounces! It's a monster!

The date is 1895. There is very often confusion with the date letter system on gold, as the cartouche varied as against different carat values and silver. More confusion is added as most hallmark references for this period of dating, illustrate a combined crown over the numerals eighteen. This was it fact an alternative that was not discontinued until 1904 when the crown and eighteen seperated became the only option.

Thanks Trev.

Now I'm sure it's Frederick Trahern.
The other possibility was Frederick Thomas. His later marks, starting on November 19 1902, have London included in the base of the cameo.
