Gold over Copper 15th or 16th Century design Spoon Marked R

Postby silversearcherz » Fri Jan 02, 2009 12:34 pm

I had seen a similar shaped spoon with less design on it on a website. You can find that spoon if you use google and type in Cuiller en argent .It is on insecula website and says the spoon is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
I have had this spoon for many years but not sure of the exact age or maker.
It appears to have an R inside a box impressed on the back of handle.
I can see some light wearage on the back of bowl that shows copper.
The V shaped piece on back of bowl is seperate and soldered on as is the handle and then plated gold over it.The spoon measures almost 5 and 1/2 inches long.I can not remember if we are allowed only 2 photos on here and what size, but to see the best detail and maybe understand more where this was made,I added a larger photo of the front.I also have a closeup photo of the back of the bowl where you can see where the V piece was soldered or attached.

This is a copy of the 'Anointing spoon' which is used at British Coronations. Some are made from silver and gilded and some from cheaper metals and gilded to sell at coronation time as a souvenir. Best wishes, Mike.
