Help need!

Postby old man kensey » Sat Jan 26, 2008 6:50 am

I would like help to identify the ring found by the links below. It belonged to my Father-in-law, who we believe picked it up whilst on his travels with the army. The family believe he may have got it whilst in Africa, although nobody is too sure. The ring was bought in the 1950's and has the mark 'NT' marked on it. I would be grateful for any details of where the ring came from and what the marks mean.

The ring is likely to be a specially commissioned one and is very likely to be gold if it came from Africa. The mark would therefore be the initials of the maker. The stone appears to me to be a 'Beryl'...but please don't take my word for that as my monitor shows things much darker than they are and I have to guess at colour.
Suggest you take it to a reputable jeweller for appraisal or a reputable auction house.
Best wishes, Mike.

Hmm, I thought the stone looked like Jade and the manufacture looked like southeast Asia...

the stone looks to me more likely to be chrysoprase than beryl (i.e. emerald or green - non-chromium-containing - beryl)

check for comparison

the stone appears to be cryptocrystalline (tiniest crystal structure) and lacking "jardin" - the "flowery" ore "garden"-like inclusions of emerald http://www.jewelinfo4u.com/images/Gallery/emerald.jpg , nephrite http://www.geocities.jp/senribb/jewels/Nephrite.jpg is fibrous and jadeite usually also has inclusions that appear like small flecks or swirls http://www.geocities.jp/senribb/jewels/JadeiteRing.jpg
