Gold Brooch mark - help please

Postby jillyjim » Sat Nov 03, 2007 11:57 pm

Hello.
Don't know if questions regarding hallmarks for gold will be ok with this forum and I apologise if I'm out of place.
However, I need to know who the maker is of this gold brooch, please.
Thanks for any help.
Jim

A W Jenner & Co. The mark is documented in Maurice H. Ridgway and Philip T. Priestley, The Compendium of Chester Gold & Silver Marks 1570 to 1962 (Woodbridge: The Antique Collectors’ Club, 2004).

Just had another look at my brooch. It's much older than the 1909 date given by that reference, Carling.
Would you know from what dates AW Jenner & Co was in operation?

1909 was the date of their registration at the Chester Assay Office. I daresay they registered earlier with the Birmingham Office though I'm afraid I don't know when.

Hi,

I'm wondering about the 15ct mark on this piece.
Carling mentioned, through private communication, that it is possible that the item was exported to Australia and therefor doesn't carry the English hallmarks. But he has seen this type of marking on other similar pieces in England (maybe due to excemptions as weight of the piece).
It could very well be that many items were brought back from Australia to the UK by government officials.

Can anyone shed more light on why this piece carries the 15ct mark?
Maybe the maker migrated from Australia and registered his maker's mark in Chester?

Thanks Tom,

Maybe the mystery, that I assigned to it in my mind, just adds to the charm of the brooch. Sounds good to me.

Hello.
For what it's worth I have always thought that this brooch was Australian made by a 'foreign' goldsmith working for an established Australian jewellery making firm. The intensity of the gold colour and the decoration have led me to believe that the maker/designer was European.
I don't own reference books that can identify the hallmark and I was satisfied with Carling's reply. Is there a possibility that the maker's mark brooch may be Australian?

Can you post your photos again, Jim? Then others can take a look. I was pretty sure when I saw them that the mark was as above.
