Hi Margaux,
Not absolutely sure, but I believe that is the retail mark of John Wanamaker, a large Philadelphia department store.
Regards, Tom

Here's a scan from Dorothy Rainwater's book of John Wanamaker's marks.

Not exactly a match, but roughly the same. About which period are we talking?

The name of the firm became John Wanamaker in 1870.
They were in business into the late 20th century.
Can't help with a date for this mark.
