Assistance with maker of hand held sterling mirror-left facing lion

Post by knittydebby »

Can someone help with identifying the maker of this silver hand held mirror? Measures 10 3/4" long. Marked lion facing left, 925, sterling. Lion's face is looking frontward. There is also a hair brush and comb in the set. The photo of the maker mark was easiest to photograph on the comb. No other marks.

Thanks in advance.

It's Lion Passant Guardant. Being an unregulated false or valse mark here, it may only be one from a group of psuedo marks used by a maker aside from their name or letter mark. Likely candidates using this make might lean towards Canadian makers, so perhaps Roden Bros. heritage through Birks-era conveyance might yield something. (Reason: This general guardant lion form has also been seen as a pseudo on silverplate, so there could be a maker in both types of production. One example in an old thread also has a B-in-shield mark. This makes Birks a potential suspect. Of course, we may never know.)
