Help identifying makers mark - Sterling Cigarette Case

Post by curlykid24 »

Can anyone help identifying this makers mark on this Sterling Cigarette Case? I can read "&CO" within the tiny circle.
Thanks!

Please confirm metal content...a "Sterling" word mark, a "925" number mark, or other?

Until then, appears to be a world-type globe mark oriented with curves at top and bottom. Letters could read left to right "WMF Co."....possibly well known German firm, but not definite yet. [Similarity to World Hand Forged Mfg. Co. NY mark (c.1950 plater) in Rainwater but not exact mark match.]

Also similar to early W.H. Saart Co. (mark 1 Rainwater) related to Saart Bros. Attleboro Mass., but would be a variant design (the center letter would have to be a large "S"). Of course, this type globe mark looks mid-century or later (Pan Am style) but was in useage much earlier (American Express style)...so date guessing by logo design is tricky.

Aha, definite an "S"...had to invert photo and re-read what looked like an upside down anchor but quickly re-oriented my view. Flipping it back it was most certainly an "S". So, now we need to note the metal content as Saart firms worked in both sterling and plate.

Another sample of your mark and buried link to the slightly alternate version held in silverplate marks: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=48059&p=144436&hilit=saart#p144436
