I have been reading your posts on these different dip pens marked sterling. Just had an idea, but can't confirm it. There was a pen manufacturer (c.1900) in Boston, Massachusetts, that was called the Sterling Fountain Pen Company. I don't know if they ever made dip pens or how they marked their pens. My references on pens don't provide any information on the company. Hope I'm not leading you in the wrong direction. Just thought I'd offer a possibility.

Dear Patrick,

What I find very difficult with american hallmarks on dip pens is that due to the size of the dip pen, most of the silversmiths had shortened marks which do not seems to be listed anywhere. For exemple FAIRCHILD who has a fairly large hallmark for other pieces is simply using an F on dip pens !!! Furthermore, it is unbelievable to see how many dip pens are simply marked STERLING with no further marks. I have investigated my Rainwater page by page and could not trace this A mark. I still do think that the maker must be fairly known as I have several dip pens with this mark. At this stage I am stucked and I do hope that someone will have the answer.

Anyway thanks again for your help

Best Regards
Myriam
