Or so I'm thinking. The mark I have a pic of for ONC doesn't have the gothic "M" above the eagle/swan, bluejay or whatever that bird is. It's hand engraved and, I would also like to know what you would call this form. the body is quite narrow. The set consists of coffee, tea, wasted sugar and creamer. The insulators are ivory. The pattern (apprantly) is "Kensington".

Any comments appreciated.

As an additional note, Old Newbury Crafters never used the eagle/phoenix as a mark on their silver - that information is mentioned in Rainwater, and has been reiterated by ONC...

Oh wow!... thanks Trev! Yes that is the mark all right and no, not a disappointment at all. It's a beautiful set in any event. What form would you call this? I've heard this style referred to as "Chippendale" but wonder if that's even close to correct.

No it's not an error, ONC provided the information to her and has confirmed it in recent years. Might also mention that the salad set on that link was manufactured by International Silver in the mid 20th century, they continued using the various versions of the Meriden trademark for decades (the design was likely by or after Alphonse LaPaglia).

Not able to check my references at the moment, but may have an ad or catalog page showing this tea set, the 'Kensington' pattern was introduced in 1912 - if you look at the flatware, you can see the similar design elements...

So I couldn't resist; I loaded up the sugar bowl, got out the Twinning's and....


..... made tea! I'll bet this hasn't had tea in it in a score of years or more! Coffee pot and creamer not pictured... no room on my little cutting board!



This is in he back of my shop so it looks a little rough. But as I've told many people: "even Vienna sausages taste better when dined upon them with sterling silver!"

Even though it's a commercial site, Replacements can be useful, and they do have research department, but there are quite a few errors...

Trev, not too much of a fancy shop... but I've been a jewelry designer/mfg. now for 39 years this year. And I've done some silver smithing too.... just small things like spoons and such. My store hass become a museum of some sort actually. I have a complete blacksmith's shop at my house and make mostly knives there. However I've of late made for myself a starter collection of silver smith's stakes for repair of hollow ware made from railroad spikes:





My maker's mark... no broken parts!




As to the phoenix mark or whatever you call it that is perhaps sometimes found on ONC pieces, I found this concerning "additional" marks begining in 1965:

I use long snarling irons clamped in a vise. Ball end (there are different sizes) is placed inside e.g. a teapot and the iron is gently hammered so it vibrates, with the ball kept inside against the dent. It`s safer than hammering the dent against the stake.

No actually the stamp I used to use was just a WJ (for Wilkins Jewelry) sort of offset. I had it made back in 1977 and broke it, literally, in half last year. It was made/designed as an inside ring stamp and I had cut out some of the steel as it was too thick to use for most rings. I tried to repair it myself buy burned it up w/the welding rod I was using. I'll post a pic of the mark though if your interested... I don't know if I've any pix of it but I can certainly draw if for you!
