Help with marks on these spoons

Postby modemgirlz » Sun Jun 11, 2006 6:54 pm

I would like to know if anyone has information on these spoons. If you can't see the mark by the bowl, on the back, it's an S. I believe it's the same S as what is on the front of the spoon, but that could be a monogram. Thank you for helping. Kristina

Simons Brothers of Philadelphia, founded in 1840. They sold off their patterns and dies to Alvin Manufacturing in 1908, so your piece is near the end of company-based production. The firm was still in business in the 1980s.

wev,
Thank you so much for the added information. So you believe perhaps around 1900? May I ask how you would come to believe that these spoons would be near the end of the company-based production? Perhaps by the pattern? I am learning and would just like to know :) Thank you so much, you have been most helpful to other posts I have as well! Kristina

The patent date on your spoon image is 28 August 1900; the firm stopped making flatware some time before 1908, hence it was made sometime in the last 8 years of a 68 year history.

Pattern is Flanders, designated as Old Flanders by Alvin (to differentiate from the 1923 New Flanders.
