Thomas Streetin? No makers mark....

Hello everyone. Hope I've displayed the pictures correctly.

The first and third pictures show the monogram "S" and the top of the handle is bent forward.

The second picture shows what looks like an abbreviated name because of the period at the end [Street.]. It also shows "sterling". Could this be Thomas Streetin?

The last picture shows the markings and PAT. 78 and a "drop".

Now the Lion. It is facing to the right and I only have seen it facing to the left in my research. The Anchor tells me Birmingham but the tail on the lion looks like the lions I've seen for Sheffield but there is no crown....and the date I have matched up with London dates for 1762.

Can you help me with this beautiful spoon. I found it very much ergonomic with the top bent forward. lol

I have 5 of them and my hubby only buffed out one of them to be able to see everything. He used his dremel...YIKES!

Thanks for any help you can give me. :)

Hi Judy,

The mark is for an American firm Gorham Manufacturing Co of Providence, RI founded in 1865. That is the Hindostance that as you noted was patented in 1878. Yes many people are confused by their particular makers mark that appears to be English at first glance.

Lovely pattern

Thank you so much Warren and Oel. What a wonderful journey I've had the past few weeks trying to unravel this mystery. I especially enjoyed reading Old London Silver, Its History, Its Makers and Its Marks by Montague Howard. Part of the writing was missing in the spoons chapter. The descriptions there had me believing I was holding an eighteenth century spoon. I'm not disappointed at all, though. I've read some about Gorham and he was quite an amazing person. :)

Is there a thread about proper cleaning of silver?
