Cartier silver and gilt chess set markings

Postby ciaranr » Sat Dec 28, 2013 6:42 pm

Hi all,

I don't know much about silver, I recently got this vintage chess set in silver and gilt, the history points to the 1950s I think.
On the bottom of the pieces there are marks. I not sure what the first two diagonal aligned letters are - they might be and old fashioned "L" followed by an "M", it kind of look like a 2 followed by an M to me...
I cannot find anything online when I search.
Do folks think this is Cartier NY?
Does the 108 marking mean anything?

Any info would be great, I am very new to this space.

Here is a link to some images:

Thanks in advance,

Hi Ciaran welcome to the forum, to me it does look like someone altered/added the letters or misspelled CARTIER in CARTIFP

I agree with Oel, the CARTIFR stamp is not of the quality one would expect on a Cartier piece: the T is crooked; the E missing the bottom bar; The style of the letters compared to the marks below it.

I would suggest looking for a match for the maker's mark above the sterling mark, it appears to be (D, F or P, or something I can't make out) and an M in script. Most likely that is the maker.

The number may be an edition number. Do all the pieces have the same numbers?

Thanks for the responses. Those all are good points. Each piece has the number 108 printed on it base. I will really look into the Cartier signature issue.

Many thanks, Ciaran
