who made this 9" plate?

Postby judym55555 » Thu Aug 15, 2013 7:34 pm

I would love to know where, when, who made this plate that belonged to my grandmother. She lived in Cumberland, MD between late 1800's and mid-1900's. Is this her purchase, or is it older? Does anyone know anything about Concord Silver Co.? There are some numbers scratched above the stamped markings. Any ideas what those might be? Any ideas would be appreciated.

The Concord Silver Co., was one of many smaller silver houses making plate and hollow-ware. It was located in Concord, NH and had a fairly short life (min 1920-the beginning of WWII). Like many firms its size they didn't survive the war.

So your plate would have been made between 1925 and 1940, Greylock would be the pattern name, and the scratched numbers could have several reasons for being there, but they are not part of the manufacturing process.

Thank you so much for your prompt response. I appreciate the information. Do you have an idea what the 98-17 might stand for, and is it sterling as the stamp says? Would they have made single plates like this as keepsakes?

Yes, it is sterling silver. The 98-17 could be an item number/stock number. I have a set of 40 similar to yours, they are numbered 1-40, 2-40, etc... They would have made possibly hundreds of them. It is a plate or under-plate. It has many uses, serving plate, charger plate, cookie tray, any use you would have for a china plate except as a dinner plate (it would be ruined quickly if meat were cut on it.

Thank you so much for your time. This has been very enlightening. I'm going to put it in the china cabinet and enjoy it!
