I'm not sure if this is an American Manufacturer but thought this is where I should start! Found this interesting piece at a rummage sale and I'm trying to find out more information about the manufacturer and where it might have come from. Any help would be appreciated!

Nice looking case. I assume that there is a release for the lid that is just showing; what is the other ring or piece that looks like it is showing on the lower right hand side of the case as it is shown in the image.

Not a cigarette case - a calling card case (that's a card represented on top of the basket-weave design), would have had a short chain handle.

Very interesting! Thanks for all of your input. Oooh... calling cards?! It does still have the original chain that connects the lid and base, you just can't see it in the photo. There is no release for the lid, it stays closed with friction. I really found a treasure when I bought this last summer and paid less than one dollar for it!!! I didn't realize it was sterling until I got it home and started looking at it.

Hehe - a very nice buy.....Have run across this particular card case several times, must have been one of Whiting's more popular designs, I certainly like it.
