Tricks or Tips on how to see hallmark more clearly please.

Postby cleblancweldon » Mon Dec 05, 2005 2:02 pm

Hello...

I have 2 small silver hallmarked salt spoons (pictured in the middle). I can read the Lion Passat mark and the 925 mark, but the letter date is difficult to make out. I believe from examination under magification that it is a script R or K (1725 or 1732). Is there any tricks I can use to bring the letter more clear without damaging the pieces?
Any help or suggestions appreciated!

Cheryl

I am guessing by your question that you believe your piece to be English. A piece of old English silver would not be marked "Sterling" or "925". The Lion Passant or Rampant, signifies that the piece is Sterling. There would then be a mark for the assay office (city where the piece was assayed for content) and finally the date letter or mark. I beleive your piece is probably American with pseudo-hallmarks.

Hard to make out the mark, but believe your pieces are by Roden Bros. of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, founded in 1891, taken over by Birks in the 1950s, not sure if Birks continued use of the Roden trademarks.
