Weird Maker's Mark Looks Like a Knight's Helmet

Postby edsgirlfriend » Mon Oct 17, 2005 10:20 pm

Hi, I'm trying to identify this mark which looks like a knight's helmet with either a B, S, or similar letter inside. This is the best picture I can get. Thanks

I'm not certain, so hopefully someone else will confirm this. However your mark may be the Barbour Silver Comany of Hartford, and then Meriden, Connecticut.
The company existed in several forms, all with the participation of Samuel Barbour. In 1898 the International Silver Company was formed as a conglomerate of different companies, and Barbour became the first president.
The Barbour Silver Comany is best known for silverplate - but as International made a sterling line - perhaps Barbour did too. One of their silverplate marks is a knight's helmet - and the letters B S would fit.

It was originally the mark for Simpson, Hall, Miller & Co. of Wallingford, CT that became part of International Silver in 1898, the mark was used well into the 20th century by International.
