my late grandmother gave this to my daughter. it's hinged and has black fabric inside. the heart is about 4 inches across, 4 inches long, and 1 inch high. i've been able to identify it as a gorham item but that's all. i would appreciate any assistance in identifying what it is/used for and when was it made? if i can get the date down, then i might be able to figure out who up the tree gave it to my grandmother (i'm clueless in the conventions of how to read monogrammed lettering, too). thank you for your help! ray

Hello. Can't help with the monogrammed lettering.
The small mark under the number 100 is probably a date mark. Check here:

The monogram appears to be MSC (not easy to tell from the angle). Since the letters are all the same hight, common use would say they should be read in order.
