Plllllease Tell Me What These Hall Marks Are! :-)

Postby hihosilva » Mon Sep 05, 2005 9:22 pm

I've looked all through the encyclopedia here a couple of times as well as other online silver ID sites and have come up with a big fat goose egg. I'm hope that some of your silver whiz "kids" can lend a hand....er...mark. Unfortunately my camera doesnt have a manual focus so it wouldnt pick up the very tiny marks so I drew them. The other pic is of the compote? The marks are lined up as seen. The first is a hawk or eagles head with feathers; the second is obviously a "D" in script and the 3rd looks to be a person, sitting or squatting and possibly a girl as it looks as if they have a band in their hair. I'm not sure what "she" is holding. Any help would be immensely appreciated. I tried like heck to reduce the drawing to an acceptable size.

Hi,
Does it have a sterling mark?, if not it is likely a piece of American silverplate of the second half of the 20th cent. The marks are not hallmarks identifiable as from any European country and the piece looks like a manufactured spun silver or plate item.

Hi Tom, Thanks for your reply. It says Sterling Reinforced with Cement under the hall marks and then 169G under that. Sorry that I omitted that originally. Your input's appreciated. Joe

Looks like Dunkirk Silversmiths of Meriden, CT. Rainwater shows them as active 1945-50.

I was researching the same mark and ran across your post. I found a nice second source of marks at Heritage Galleries.

Here's my photo of the mark. I actually like your drawing better. The photo at Heritage is much better. What is that thing on the right? Looks like a dog in a raincoat climbing a clown's hat.

Charlie.....thanks a heap! I didn't know about Heritage, that's a great resource. And that's a good pic. :-)
