Gallia Chocolate set unknown makers mark.. Christofle ??

Postby scott1 » Mon Oct 15, 2007 12:42 pm

Hello all,
I have recently bought a nice Gallia chocolatier set, the person i
bought it from knew little about it
so i am attampting to work out who and when which is proving a
challenge as the marks i think arent common.
I hope that it might be an early CHRISTOFLE mark but have no
evidence to supportthis hunch.

I would be very greatfull if you can have a look at the marks and
share your learned thoughts with me.

Many thanks in advANCE FOR YOUR HELP IN THIS MATTTER.

Hello, yes, that is a Gallia product made by Christofle. The history of Gallia seems to be a little complicated. It goes back to a certain Felix Cheron, who produced plated tableware in Paris in the late 19th century. Around 1909 owner of Gallia was H. Harleux. The 1910 supplement to the catalogue shows production numbers up to 5284. So I guess Your pieces were first made around 1911. Looks like Gallia was split up some time after that. Part of the production went to Paris maker Henin, another part to Christofle. Beside using the old Gallia mark (the French rooster), Christofle often (not always) punched a second mark. Most often the “C C” mark with a scale was used, sometimes “C C” with a goat’s head. I have not seen the mark on Your pieces before. The Christofle archive is still quite intact, maybe they know more. Best wishes, Bahner

Hi,

Chocolate (the handle on the pot is the main clue).
Typically there would be a rod in the knob of the pot, named a moussoir, but that is not always present (or lost). I don't think it's there in your set.
