Can't identify silver plate maker or hallmarks

Postby artworks » Fri Sep 02, 2005 7:35 am

Can anyone identify the maker of this object. It was made during WWII in Geislingen Germany.

The mark looks like OX, then the symbol for Geisllingen, the As.

German Hallmarks See - WMF silverplate.

Sure about the date? Looks more like an 1890's object.

If you look at the full view in larger image you will notice that it has all the sybology of the Luffewaffe.

Hi, I'm the first to admit that I have no knowledge of militaria, so the symbology of the Luftwaffe is not registering.
I see a pair of crossed flintlock muskets with a decorative wreath (laurel? symbol of victory)
Had I found this item, I would have taken it to be a shooting trophy of the 1890's. If there is engraving on the bowl, indicating otherwise, your flash did it in and it is not visible.
WMF is a very successful firm, still in business today, mainly because they produce quality work and have always kept in step with current trends in taste. Design wise, it is definitely not the type of work that WMF was producing in the 30's, which was very modern, Bauhaus inspired Art Deco. I'm fairly sure they had also stopped using the "running ostrich" mark long before WWII and seem to recall that the company's decorative lines were suspended during the war while they retooled and produced wartime necessities.
Regards, Tom

Thanks Tom.

On the cup of the chalice is the flying eagle holding a swaztika which was on of the symbols of the Luftwaffe along with the wreath. So this cup has several conflicting symbols.

Do you know an address of the WMF that I could write to. I would love to solve this little mystery.

Your responses have been helpful, thanks again.

Hi Jeanne,
Here's the website homepage which will lead you to their subwebsites for different countries. Suggest, despite the language difference, you try the email contact at their German site, rather than the US site.
Good luck and let us know what you learn.
Thanks, Tom

The WMF mark on your piece dates from 1909/10 to 1925 when the ostrich was dropped. OX means Oxidiert, oxidised, and AS is Antikversilberung, antique silver finish.
My guess too is that it was a shooting trophy, re-engraved in the Nazi period. Although it is also possible that the swastika insignia is a forgery!
