Need some help with Russian marks, please! :0)

Postby SusanWhite » Fri Apr 13, 2007 2:14 am

Hello Everyone!

We have some Russian items with marks we can't identify. Kira's mom bought the stuff in Moscow in the 1950's. We don't see any 84 stamp, so don't know if it's sterling or plate.

There is a set of flatware and a set of cup holders, both have the same markings with different makers, I think. I'm putting these items together because it seemed logical.

Any help would be hugely appreciated!

Sincerely,
Susan

Hi Susan.

Your cup holders are called "Podstakanniks" or tea glass holders.
Check out this thread:

I don't see any marks that indicate your flatware is solid silver.

Regards,
Pat.

Dear Patrick,

Thanks for your help, it is really appreciated. We had kinda come to the same conclusion and figured it is probably silverplate. We found a great site that has Russian maker's marks, but nothing matched these marks.

Again, thank you for your help!

Sincerely,
Susan (Kira & Christine, too)

Susan,
knib is cyrillic for KIEV (ukrainian)
milli 15-20 is the price: 15 rubles and 20 kopeks
silver plate pre 1918
pre 1918 because the I in the cyrillic language was done away with, then.
This is a high price for this type of item and would be considered high end at that period of time.
Hope this helps,
Buz
