I have a pair of silverplated Mappin & Webb 8" hollow handle, silverplate blade, knives. I have a couple of questions regarding them:
1) I cannot make out the date code letter ("w"?)
2) Is there any significance to the monogram - griffin? sitting on top of a crown?
As always, I very much appreciate any help.
Regards,
Dave
Mappin & Webb Knives Interesting Monogram
Re: Mappin & Webb Knives Interesting Monogram
Hi Dave,
To my knowledge, the Mappin & Webb date system codes remain unbroken (to any degree of certainty). This is partially due to do with the problem of two different dating systems being used for 'Mappin Plate' and 'Prince's Plate'.
We have made a little headway, see: viewtopic.php?f=38&t=24149
As far as the crest is concerned, very likely that of a British hotel or restaurant chain.
