Maker's Mark on Salver

Postby Biju » Mon Mar 29, 2021 11:43 am

Hi All,

Hoping someone can help me identify the maker's mark on this salver. The last photo shows the only mark I could find on the entire piece.

TIA

Thanks so much Trev for your reply. Following up, I have two questions:
1) Any thoughts as to why there would be only the single mark (crossed keys) on this whole piece without the additional initial marks, "EP"/"EPNS" marks, etc.?
2) How do you come to the 1892 dating of the piece?

Hi,

It was not uncommon for well-known makers to strike a single mark only, especially on early pieces.

The 1892 date is not the date of the item's manufacture, but the date of the advertisement. Your item, I suspect, would be somewhat earlier.

Any guesses on dating it then? Thanks.

In 1892 the business went into liquidation and was bought by Walker & Hall.

Walker and Hall took over “Henry Wilkinson” in 1892 but may have continued to use the name and “mark” for a while.

If I had to guess, I would say around the 1850's. It's a great looking piece and may have influenced by items displayed at the Great Exhibition of 1851.

HI AG2012,

See: viewtopic.php?f=38&t=38614&p=183532&hilit=wilkinson#p183532

and: viewtopic.php?f=38&t=38614&p=183544&hilit=wilkinson#p183544

Somewhere I have a spoon struck with the marks of both firms.

These are the marks on a cake stand from 1912 showing both the Walker & Hall pennant and the Henry Wilkinson crossed keys.
