Christofle Wine Bottle Coaster

Postby themichaelfrank » Fri Sep 18, 2020 2:37 pm

Just sharing info on an item from a estate sale I’d picked up and gotten some info on:
Silver plated coaster, the pattern “filets fond rayonné” was in the Christofle catalogue from 1862 to WWI.

(Haven’t yet found anything yet on the center engraving.)
Cheers, Michael

Looks naval and royal, so wiki for all HMS Unicorn vessels: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Unicorn
US submarine Unicorn seems unlikely with crown.

This is the variant CC mark with bee at bottom whose date was unknown. Might be threads on that.

The crown is called a mural crown. It is of Roman origin and often used by municipalities as an expression of their power and authority. Many, many French cities have a mural crown in their coat of arms: Paris, Neuilly-sur-Seine, and Saint-Lô immediately come to mind. My guess is that this is the coat of arms of a French city, a nautical club or a private yacht.

thanks guys, appreciate the leads on the engraving imagery.

Did not know about the mural crown. I'd mistaken it for something like the castle & towers icon of the Corps of Engineers.
