Mysterious mark on a J.Margold-vase/Austria-Hungary/Wiener Werkstatte

Postby almos_ » Sat Aug 15, 2020 7:31 am

Hello Everybody!

I've got a mysterious mark on a silver plated vase of Josef Margold, member of WW and Darmstadt artists colony. He worked in Austria-Hungary, Germany, then Bratislava/Czechoslovakia too. These pieces and designs typically produced by Wolkenstein & Glückselig, Vienna, between 1910-13.
I've never met with a similar hallmark like this. It seems 'EP40' or 'EF40' 'EPAO' 'EFAO'; Above like mountains or pine-trees(?). Margold worked lot of silversmiths and metalwork companies together in Vienna and Austria-Hungary.

Maybe somebody recognize it. Really thanks!

Hi,
Not much help with exact maker but those three mountain peaks are unmistakable Tatra, Fatra and Matra, three iconic mountains in Slovakia, also seen in ancient Hungarian coat of arms when Slovakia was part of the Empire.
Unfortunately, Sandrik had different, well known flower mark, although during WWII they used three peaks of Slovakia impressed on their Wehrmacht products.
