Diamond Registry-Entered 31 May 1880 (31-E-J. I don't believe they said Asiatic back then). Any clues on who did this beauty? TIA

Oh, yes--place or table spoon. Bowl pattern front only. Handle, both sides with fan added to back detail.

Hi,

I've seen several pieces of this pattern of flatware over the years, all unmarked with the exception of British Registry Design mark. The pattern, I believe, was used by several different manufacturers and usually described as 'Japanese'.

A couple of points worth bearing mind when trying to solve this mystery. The registry mark may not refer to the pattern, but may refer to some other design detail, and not all registrants were British, overseas firms and individuals also registered their designs over here for protection. In your case, we could be looking at an American made piece.

A couple of stand out names with Class I registrations on 31st May 1880:



William Gallimore and William W. Harrison were both flatware manufacturers.

Interestingly, this same pattern was just recently posted on another forum, but the day of the month on that piece is clearly a '13' rather than '31' (perhaps a die cutting error?)...

On the two suggestions from the Patents Journal, the 'Harrison' registration is for a flower stand, unfortunately, the subject isn't identified for the 'Gallimore' registration.

I know this is not a ceramics site, but try to imagine a complete set of this silverware being coupled with this Bamboo pattern British china from that era:





Putting this together today would be a lifelong occupation.
