Large decanter holder ?maker? marks

Postby misled » Wed Jan 18, 2017 10:26 pm

I have been asked to look into this large decanter set . The owner has said she thinks it may be french but i'm not sure . I cant for the life of me ID the hallmarks or the maker. Any help would be most appreciated.

Hi,

Welcome to the Forum.

Not hallmarks I'm afraid, but English silver plater's marks.

This particular set of marks has always been confusing as it is found with various sets of initials struck at the end, and sometimes with a slight variation with the marks. It may be that of a manufacturer of blanks who was supplying silver platers and marked the pieces with their initials.

The marks may be connected to Thomas Wilkinson:

The above is the mark of Thomas Wilkinson, the fourth mark being his famous Pelican device. His former manufactory, the Pelican Works, is a well known landmark at Birmingham. Thomas Wilkinson was in business from 1832 until 1932.

Further detail regarding Thomas Wilkinson can be found at: Some Birmingham Tradecards and Advertisements
