Russian tea cup holders - can't read!

Postby ldj2452 » Tue Jul 25, 2006 4:55 pm

We've seen similar pieces online while researching, but have no clue about markings. We've been trying for clues through the images.
We think we found an online photo of the building; it is in Russia. In addition to the marks on the cup bottom the number 5 is deeply stamped on the uppermost part of the handle.
Not much luck with the lady. Those on the Lady cup are partially missing and can't be read. We can make out "?M2MET1COPT" Grateful appreciation for any discussion.
Linda

Hello, on the right one you can see the Sputnik, the first Russian sattelite from 1957, so it is much younger. The lady is just a symbol for progress. The stalinistic architecture on the left one also points at a more recent make. Maybe pieces like these are still in production, they appear so often on the market. Best wishes, Bahner

Hi Tom, bahner and Linda

They are indeed Russian and are called "podstakannik" which literally means "under the glass". They are tea glass holders and the one on the right is entitled "City of Moscow" ( sorry bahner, not part of the Space series which has a set of four). I have a set of the "City of Moscow". The metal is silver plate over nickel and copper, but I don't have a year of manufacture. They are produced out of Russia and can still be purchased online today. Many different kinds are available. Hope this helps! (Tom: my grandmother cameover to the US from Austria, or as she pronounced it "Owwstria" rolling the "r". Nice to meet you!)

On another board I visit a poster called Andrevsky provided the following information on similar tea glass holders.

"The bird is something like a wood grouse. Below the bird there is the letter "K". That is the logo of "Koltchuginski Savod" in Koltchugina (Russia). The next three kyrillic letters "MNZ" stand for the material which is a copper/nickel/zinc alloy. Next kyrillic letter "Z" means "Zena" (= price). And prices were 3p50k (i.e. 3 Rubles 50 Kopeks) from 1985 to 1991 and 4p60k from 1977 to 1985. Between 1977 and 1985 the tea glass holders were silver plated. This type of podstakannik has been produced from the early sixties until today with different hallmarks. You might find new ones with glasses in shops in Russia and Belarus."
