WR Humphries & Co Knife & Fork Set

Postby Raynie » Fri Sep 04, 2015 2:04 am

I have found WRH & Co on this site but not in the same format that appears on the items. In case it is not clear, "WRH" is the first stamp, "&Co" is the second stamp, and then I think there is an "S" in the third stamp. I am not sure if they are silver or silver plated? They are relatively untarnished. I am assuming they are of the Sheffield company William R Humphries & Co., but have been unable to find an identical set of stamps online so haven't any idea of the age.

Secondly, do you know what these would have been used for? They are quite small and fine - length of knife 18cm and the fork slightly smaller. Perhaps entrée?

Would appreciate your help. Thank you.[img][/img]

Hi Raynie,

Welcome to the Forum.

Yes, that will be one of the marks used by William R. Humphries (Humphreys) & Co. of Sheffield. As with many platers' marks, there are variations.

As for there use, yes entrée, desert, or even for a child's use.

In future posts you are far more likely to get a response if you embed your images as few people will click on links.

Thank you Trev. I followed the instructions on the website for the photos but found it quite confusing! Will this cutlery be silver or silver plate do you think? And would you have any idea of the decade of production? Thanks.

Hi Raynie,

The items are silver plated. Datewise, I can only guess at c.1900.

Persevere with the embedding of the images. By using the preview feature you can have as many attempts as like and once you've cracked it you'll wonder what the problem was.

Thanks Trev - you've been a great help. The site is very interesting, and I will persevere with the images if I find anything else I need help with. Cheers from New Zealand.

Raylene.

Opened up your photos, closed them, and got a screen full of unwanted nasties! That's a first!

Knife blade looked a bit blunt or unsharpened in photo image. Perhaps a fruit knife and matched fork?

Sorry Traintime - I don't know how that could happen. Thanks for your post.
