Would like help with Danish? spoon

Postby touchstone » Wed Aug 12, 2015 11:51 am

I am trying to figure out the marks on the back of a silver spoon that I believe to be Danish in origin (at least it used to belong to a Danish relative, but of course that doesn't necessarily mean the spoon is Danish.)

The spoon:

The marks (the yellowish cast is due to the lighting used):

A close-up of the "crown" is:

I have been looking through the various marks on this site, but I'm not seeing one with a crown & "H.C.D. III".

Any help would be appreciated—thank you!

Hello Trev-

So the spoon is Danish, but since there are no "towers" on it, does that mean it is not silver, but rather that it is silver-plate (in which case I posted this in the incorrect area, sorry!) But wouldn't it have 2 towers on it in that case? Or, maybe the "crown" means something pertaining to silver?

Interesting that I was reading it as a continuous "H.C.D. III" like a name (for example Hans C. Dawsen the Third) but now that I look at the photos you referred to me, I wonder if the "III" is similar to that bowl's "II" inside a shield mark? Perhaps it should be read as an "H.C.D" with a separating ".", then the "III"?

Thank you so much!

Hi again, Trev-

I found this about a "Hans Christian Drewsen", born 1823, died 1874, so it matches:
https://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=da&u=https://da.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hans_Christian_Drewsen&prev=search

and following a link in there, got to:
https://translate.googleusercontent.com/translate_c?depth=1&hl=en&prev=search&rurl=translate.google.com&sl=da&u=https://da.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galvanoplastik&usg=ALkJrhies4guCuNF6jjLQ089MlmpVIJ6tQ

So it seems likely that the spoon is silver-plate, given Hans' occupation, rather than silver, unless Hans had a side hobby of making silver items! :) I wouldn't know how to tell other than tracking it down by the maker. It is about 17.4 cm long, and it weighs 50 g.

Without official Danish assay marks or other markings such as 'Sterling', etc. it is almost certainly only plated.

The two-towers mark was only in use from the 1890's to around 1930.

that is 11 lødig.
